The aim of the program is to build human capacity in terms of scientists, research engineers and academicians who contribute to advancement of science and technology in computer engineering at both the national and international level, who have acquired the concept of innovative scientific research, the practice of lifelong learning, who lead research and development activities geared towards societal needs, who will use science and technology for the common good of society and humanity, who respect the environment and ethical values and who are competitive in the international arena.

The mission of the ITU Computer Engineering PhD Programme includes creation and application of the continuous quality improvement processes for the education and research as well as providing the required infrastructure, uniting the highest quality students and faculty members in its programme, and aim at sourcing and supporting doctoral thesis topics with nationally and internationally funded projects.

Program Profile

ITU Computer Engineering PhD Program is designed for students who have adopted the spirit of research, innovation and entrepreneurship, who can use science and technology for the benefit of society and humanity, who respect the environment and ethical values, who have adopted lifelong learning as a principle, who can contribute to the development of science and technology at national and international levels in the field of Computer Engineering. It aims to raise individuals who can compete internationally. ITU Computer Engineering PhD program has adopted the principle of establishing and implementing continuous quality improvement processes in education and research studies and providing the necessary infrastructure, bringing together the most qualified students and faculty members in the programs, and ensuring that PhD's thesis topics originate from and are supported by national and international projects. In the Computer Engineering PhD program, studies are carried out in the fields of Software Engineering, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Computer Vision and Image Processing, Natural Language Processing, Computer Networks, Robotics, Parallel and Distributed Systems, Cloud Computing and Big Data, Data Mining.

Application Requirements (For T.C Nationality)
ALES Numerical must be minimum 80 (old system GRE Quantitative minimum 720, new system GRE minimum 156 ). Graduate GPA must be minimum 3.00/4 (76.66/100). Minimum GPA from undergraduate to doctorate must be 3.00/4 (76.66/100). Computer Engineering, Artificial Intelligence and Data Engineering, Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Engineering, Informatics Engineering, Electronics and Communications Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Telecommunications Engineering, Control Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Mathematics Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering and similar programs with equivalent curriculum. It is the applicant´s responsibility to contact a departmental faculty member in his/her interested area of research, and to receive a reference letter indicating that the faculty member will be acting as an advisor in case the applicant is accepted prior to the interview. The students who does not producing such a letter will not be shortlisted for an interview. Please note that producing such a letter will not necessarily save you a spot for acceptance. Additionally applicants should provide a published academic paper. Minimum GPA from undergraduate to doctorate must be 3.5/4 (88.33/100).

Program Educational Objectives

• Acquire the necessary knowledge, skills and understanding of mathematics, basic sciences, computer science and engineering principles, which are required for solving advanced problems in computer engineering
• Have a solid grasp of the main literature, methods, and applications in a certain field of computer engineering discipline from theoretical, experimental design and implementation perspective.
• Propose solutions to intra- or inter-disciplinary problems by cooperating both within computer engineering or across different disciplines
• Acquire continuous education skills by following scientific developments in his/her field
• Acquire basic teaching skills in computer engineering undergraduate curriculum as well as graduate courses in his/her field


Measurement and Evaluation

Evaluating Student Success
The student success is evaluated considering Articles 56, 57, 58, and 59 of the Istanbul Technical University Graduate Education and Training Regulation Senate Principles.

ARTICLE 56 - Before the enrollment for the courses begins, the faculty member who offers the course informs the Program Executive Committee about the types, number and contribution percentage to the final grade of the studies within the semester, as well as requirements for a right to take the semester final exam. These requirements shall be finalized by approval of the Program Executive Committee and approval of the chair of the department, who declares them to the student and informs the Graduate School.

ARTICLE 57 - A student may appeal the final grade of a course within one week following the announcement of the grades. Appeals must be submitted to the Graduate School in writing. The relevant faculty member shall re-evaluate the student's success status and submit the result to the Graduate School within one week. Appeals not submitted within the prescribed time frame shall not be considered by the Graduate School.

ARTICLE 59 - Students who wish to improve their cumulative grade point average may retake courses during the course-taking period. The most recent grade will be counted for the repeated courses.


Internship

There is no internship in this program.


Graduation Requirements

At least 7 graduate courses from ITU Computer Engineering PhD Programme package where at least four of them should have 6XX code, should be completed; pass PhD Qualitification exam, thesis study and thesis defense. For graduation: at least one publication in an international conference with proceedings, and at least one published SCI or SCI-E indexed journal article are required.

Those students whose undergraduate degree is not Computer Engineering should complete a Scientific Preparation programme before starting PhD programme. The Scientific Preparation involves passing six courses: Data Structures, Algorithms II, Microprocessor Systems, Formal Languages and Automata, Operating Systems, Digital Circuits.
