Information About The Program
The Department of Economics, a vibrant and central location of Istanbul, offers a unique program in undergraduate economics that excel both in the theory and the practice of economics with the goal of producing world class and globally competitive economics majors.
The Department of Economics at ITU plays a central role in channeling ITU’s vast technical expertise of 250 years to micro- and macroeconomic policy making. To achieve this goal, the Department employs in its teaching and research activities a multidisciplinary approach including joint workshops, seminars, guest lecturers and projects with ITU’s basic science and engineering departments. Field expertise of departmental faculty parallels this mission and includes Development Economics, Education Economics, Energy Economics, Health Economics, Industrial Organization, and International Trade. The students are expected to specialize in one of these fields via choosing their elective classes, internships, and graduation thesis topic accordingly.
Our professors are active both in research and consulting and advising public and private institutions. These experiences are reflected in the classroom contributing to the specialization of the students who are integrated to some of these projects.
As a social science, Economics examines the production and consumption oriented decisions of individuals, firms, and states. Because it assumes that the average individual is generally rational, Economics can develop some testable propositions and determine positively the effect of various decisions strategies, and policies on social welfare. In addition, systematic deviations from rationality are examined under the behavioral economics electives. More specifically, Economic Sciences examine via advanced theories and models topics such as market structures, unemployment, money supply, and taxation using tools like Game Theory and Econometrics. Graduates who obtain a Bachelor of Science degree from ITU Economics gain competency in assessing the aforementioned examinations and develop business strategies and public policies.

Program Profile
The Department of Economics at Istanbul Technical University offers a comprehensive undergraduate program that integrates the theoretical foundations of economics with quantitative analysis and applied methods. The program aims to equip students with a deep understanding of microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, the ability to evaluate complex economic problems within an analytical framework, and the measurement, modeling, and data analysis skills required by modern economic practice.
The curriculum is structured around core courses in economic theory, mathematics, statistics, econometrics, and programming during the early years of study. Students strengthen their quantitative competencies through applied work conducted in computer laboratories, where they engage with numerical analysis and statistical software. In intermediate and advanced coursework, students have the opportunity to specialize in areas such as game theory, monetary economics, international economics, development economics, environmental economics, and market structures, allowing them to gain both theoretical depth and analytical breadth.
The pedagogical approach emphasizes interactive learning, critical thinking, and research skills. Case studies, in-class discussions, academic article reviews, and project-based assignments are widely employed in the courses. Students are expected to produce research papers, data analysis projects, and applied economic studies in various courses; this process enhances their problem-solving abilities, academic writing skills, and evidence-based evaluation capacity.
The program supports students in gaining a global perspective through an extensive Erasmus exchange network.
