Information About The Program

Today, "Construction Project Management" is an area of expertise and an independent profession that is being effectively implemented in the construction sector in many developed countries of the world such as USA, UK, Canada, and Australia. There are many undergraduate, graduate and doctorate programs providing education for the field of "Construction Project Management" in the world. There are also professional organizations that consist the professional people working in the subject of "Construction Projects Management", unions, institutions and organizations that constitute and implement regulatory standards and regulations.
In Turkey, "Construction Project Management" subject area has firstly been involved in some of the courses that are being given under the Department of Architecture degree program in ITU Faculty of Architecture. The first graduate program on "Construction Project Management" was established in 1973 under the affiliation of the ITU Faculty of Architecture. Its name and content has changed over time; has continued and maintained its existence for 45 years. Since 2000, the graduate program has been continuing its education as a thesis master program under the name of "Project and Construction Management" affiliated to the ITU Institute of Science, Engineering and Technology.
The subject of “Construction Project Management” has been firstly taken part within the scope of "Construction Equipment" course under the Civil Engineering undergraduate program in 1974 and established a graduate program in 1991 and a certificate program in 1998. “Construction Management” thesis master program, which was opened in 1991-1992 academic year in the Faculty of Civil Engineering, has started to be preferred by the most successful graduates of civil engineering departments. In 2006-2007 academic year, has continued to education as an independent program.
Due to the qualifications awarded to the students in the graduate programs of "Project and Construction Management" and "Construction Management"; when they are introduced to the business life, the graduates draw attention with their successful approaches to the technical and managerial problems of the construction sector. Important companies prefer the graduates of these programs; and many companies that require technical staff have indicated that they would like to employ graduates of these programs. Program graduates are currently working in leading companies in the construction sector, in important positions both in Turkey and abroad.
“Construction Projects Management” non-thesis master program responds to intense requests for training in "Construction Project Management", updating training and/or acquiring new knowledge and skills who:
• New graduates who want to work in the area of "Construction Project Management" in the sector and who want to improve their knowledge acquired in their undergraduate courses from level of awareness to the level of ability to understand and implement.
• New graduates who want to work in the area of "Construction Project Management" in the sector but have not received any training in these subjects during their undergraduate education.
• People who have acquired a certain professional experience in the sector after the undergraduate education, understand the importance of the subject while working in the sector, and want to enrich such knowledge and skills in the area with a formal education.
• People who work as project and construction managers in the sector but who have not received any training in this area and want to enrich their skills with a formal education.
• People who understand the importance of the subject while working in the sector and who want to enrich the knowledge and skills of the area with a formal education but cannot follow a thesis program because of the intensive work pressure.

ALES Numerical must be minimum 60 (old system GRE Quantitative minimum 634, new system GRE minimum 151 ). Undergraduate GPA must be minimum 2.5/4 (65/100). Graduation must be Electrical Engineering, Interior Architecture, Civil Engineering, Business, Management Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Architecture. The teaching language method of this program is Turkish. English is not a requirement to start education.

Program Educational Objectives

• The training of professional people who have deep knowledge about the implementation of the area of construction projects management both in the office and jobsite and who can provide the continuity and sustainability of the acquired knowledge by following the developing technology
• In the cross section of architecture, civil engineering and management engineering, conducting original research by using theoretical knowledge through various approaches, methods and techniques
• To provide graduates group and individual research ethics, discipline and culture
• To ensure graduates that they have access to available information and can concentrate and categorize them in the direction of research in order to bring contemporary solutions to existing problems of the construction sector
• To gain graduates skills of problem solving in the area of construction projects management, decision making and leadership
• To inform graduates about different construction project delivery systems and to provide the awareness of responsibilities of a construction project manager in the case of acting on behalf of the owner and contractor
• To provide the awareness of the forms of business used in the international construction market and problems encountered by understanding the importance of the internationalization of the Turkish construction sector
• To ensure graduates that they can use contemporary management techniques and tools, current communication and information technologies which are used in the area of construction projects management


Measurement and Evaluation

Evaluating Student Success
The student success is evaluated considering Articles 56, 57, 58, and 59 of the Istanbul Technical University Graduate Education and Training Regulation Senate Principles.

ARTICLE 56 - Before the enrollment for the courses begins, the faculty member who offers the course informs the Program Executive Committee about the types, number and contribution percentage to the final grade of the studies within the semester, as well as requirements for a right to take the semester final exam. These requirements shall be finalized by approval of the Program Executive Committee and approval of the chair of the department, who declares them to the student and informs the Graduate School.

ARTICLE 57 - A student may appeal the final grade of a course within one week following the announcement of the grades. Appeals must be submitted to the Graduate School in writing. The relevant faculty member shall re-evaluate the student's success status and submit the result to the Graduate School within one week. Appeals not submitted within the prescribed time frame shall not be considered by the Graduate School.

ARTICLE 59 - Students who wish to improve their cumulative grade point average may retake courses during the course-taking period. The most recent grade will be counted for the repeated courses.

Graduation Requirements

Courses in “Construction Project Management” non-thesis master program have been prepared taking into consideration the knowledge and skills that a construction project manager should have and the current requirements of the construction sector. Considering the "ITU Master and Ph.D. Graduate Program Opening Criteria", in order to graduate from the “Construction Project Management” non-thesis master program; it is necessary to successfully complete a total of 36 credits and to be successful in the scientific work to be prepared within the scope of graduation project. 50% of 36 credits are compulsory courses and 50% are selective courses.

Construction project managers make plans based on the basic criteria of time, cost and quality in all design and construction phases following the decision to build; coordinate the project participants; and supervise the construction project. Construction project managers have titles such as project manager, project supervisor, site manager, section manager, coordinator, etc. in the sector. A construction project manager working under the owner, either can be a salaried employee or a consultant who makes efficient decisions in the whole construction process to the owner; or can be an owner or a salaried employee of a construction management or a contractor company. Construction project managers can plan and manage a certain part or whole of a construction project; and work with architects, engineers and other participants in the building production process.
Construction project managers can work in a main office, where all decisions regarding the building production process are made and audited, or in a site office. By means of the advances in information and communication technology, construction project managers are able to work in the site without disconnecting from the main office; provide and inspect the implementation of decisions taken in short, medium and long terms.
Those who want to be a construction project manager should have basic knowledge in business and management as well as basic knowledge related to construction sciences. Construction project managers should be able to prepare and/or understand plans, contracts and technical specifications; should have knowledge about construction methods, building materials and legal requirements, occupational health and safety, construction site management, construction machinery and labor management. They should be able to use software for cost estimation, time planning and scheduling.
Construction project managers' opportunities to rise in their careers depend on their personal performance and the size of the company they work with. In large companies, construction project managers can be promoted to top level management. Construction project managers can be an expert in independent consultancy, court or settlement agencies and can provide construction management or general contracting services by establishing their own companies.

Program Outcomes

P.O.1 The ability to use the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired in the PCM area, developing and intensifying those knowledge, based upon the competency gained in the undergraduate level, Interpreting and forming new types of knowledge by combining the knowledge from the PCM area and knowledge from various other disciplines.
P.O.2 Using the knowledge and the skills for problem solving and/or application (which are processed within the PCM area) in inter-disciplinary studies, grasping the inter-disciplinary interaction related to the PCM area.
P.O.3 Solving the problems faced in the PCM area by making use of the research methods, developing new strategic approaches to solve the unforeseen and complex problems arising in the practical processes of the PCM area and coming up with solutions while taking responsibility, assessing the specialistic knowledge and skill gained through the study with a critical view and directing one’s own learning process, the ability to carry out a specialistic study related to the PCM area independently.
P.O.4 Fulfilling the leader role in the environments where solutions are sought for the problems related to the PCM area, ability to see and develop social relationships and the norms directing these relationships with a critical look and the ability to take action to change these when necessary.
P.O.5 Paying regard to social, scientific, cultural and ethical values during the collecting, interpreting, practicing and announcing processes of the PCM area related data and the ability to teach these values to others, developing strategy, policy and application plans concerning the subjects related to the PCM area and the ability to evaluate the end results of these plans within the frame of quality processes.
P.O.6 Using the computer software together with the information and communication technologies efficiently and according to the needs of the PCM area, proficiency in a foreign language and establishing written and oral communication with that language, the ability to present one’s own work within the international environments orally, visually and in written forms, systematically transferring the current developments in the PCM area and one’s own work to other groups in and out the PCM area; in written, oral and visual forms.
