Information About The Program

PhD programme; consist of study after bachelor or master degree, proficiency exam, thesis proposal and thesis study. The Ph.D. Program in Geological Engineering is an education that gives students the ability to conduct independent research, interpret and analyse scientific phenomena with a broad and deep perspective, and determine the steps necessary to reach new syntheses. This education is carried out by Graduate School of Science Engineering and Technology. Doing a PhD study, it must involve one of the qualities of bringing innovation, developing new scientific methods, and applying known methods to a new field. Graduate programs in Geological Engineering are of the same name as the branches of the institute, as stated in article seven of the Organization and Operation Regulations of Graduate Education Institutes.
Students who have undergraduate and graduate degrees in Geological Engineering PhD program are accepted. It consists of a minimum of seven courses, proficiency exam, thesis proposal and thesis study, not less than twenty-one credits for Master's students. For the students who are accepted by the undergraduate degree, the course consists of fourteen courses, not less than forty credits, proficiency exam, thesis proposal and thesis. It can also be organized in the form of integrated doctoral programs both at home and abroad.
The period of completion of the Ph.D. Program in Geological Engineering with all student rights is six years (12 semesters) for those who are admitted to the graduate level and nine (18 semesters) for those who are accepted by the undergraduate degree. In the event of a student being overrun, student status will continue without the benefit of other rights granted to the student, except participation in courses and exams.
The maximum duration of successful completion of the credited courses required for the Ph.D. program is, two years for those admitted to the graduate degree and three years for those admitted to the undergraduate degree. Those who cannot complete their education within the maximum period may continue their education according to the direction of Graduate School of Science Engineering and Technology, taking into consideration the conditions specified in Article forty-six of Law 2547.

Course types and contents are qualitative and quantitative, allowing specialization in different branches of geological engineering discipline. ITU Mining Faculty Geological Engineering Department carries out this program with 34 faculty members with expertise and experience in various research subjects and laboratory richness for different profession.

Measurement and Evaluation

Evaluating Student Success
The student success is evaluated considering Articles 56, 57, 58, and 59 of the Istanbul Technical University Graduate Education and Training Regulation Senate Principles.

ARTICLE 56 - Before the enrollment for the courses begins, the faculty member who offers the course informs the Program Executive Committee about the types, number and contribution percentage to the final grade of the studies within the semester, as well as requirements for a right to take the semester final exam. These requirements shall be finalized by approval of the Program Executive Committee and approval of the chair of the department, who declares them to the student and informs the Graduate School.

ARTICLE 57 - A student may appeal the final grade of a course within one week following the announcement of the grades. Appeals must be submitted to the Graduate School in writing. The relevant faculty member shall re-evaluate the student's success status and submit the result to the Graduate School within one week. Appeals not submitted within the prescribed time frame shall not be considered by the Graduate School.
