Information About The Program
The Geological Engineering Undergraduate Program is conducted within the scope of the engineering undergraduate programs carried out at Istanbul Technical University, in accordance with the relevant legislation on higher education and university regulations. The program aims to provide students with a comprehensive undergraduate education through an educational approach that integrates fundamental scientific knowledge in geosciences and geological engineering with engineering applications.
The Geological Engineering Undergraduate Program aims to educate engineers who are capable of producing solutions to problems encountered in the fields of geology and geological engineering by using scientific methods, and who possess knowledge and skills in the exploration and evaluation of natural resources, the understanding and management of natural hazards, the solution of environmental problems, and the sustainable use of resources. Within the scope of the program, students receive a comprehensive education that includes basic engineering sciences, geoscience disciplines, laboratory applications, and field studies.
The program is carried out in line with a student-centered education approach and is supported by theoretical courses, laboratory applications, and field studies. Thanks to the modern laboratory infrastructure and research opportunities available within the ITU Geological Engineering Department, students have the opportunity to become familiar with current scientific methods and technologies.
The ITU Geological Engineering Undergraduate Program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission (EAC) of ABET and is a program that meets international engineering education standards (www.abet.org).
Graduation Requirements
The Geological Engineering Undergraduate Program is conducted in accordance with the regulations governing undergraduate education at Istanbul Technical University. The normal duration of the undergraduate program is 8 semesters (4 years), and in order for students to successfully complete the program, they are required to complete all courses and applications included in the curriculum.
In order to graduate from the program, students must:
Successfully complete the compulsory and elective courses included in the curriculum,
Fulfill the laboratory applications and field studies required within the scope of the program,
Complete the total ECTS credit load determined for the program,
Meet the graduation requirements determined by Istanbul Technical University.
In order to graduate from the program, students must have a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 2.00/4.00 and must successfully complete all courses included in the program curriculum. Students who meet all these requirements are entitled to receive the Geological Engineering Undergraduate Diploma.
Course Load
In order to complete the Geological Engineering Undergraduate Program, students must successfully complete a total course load of 138.5 credits (254 ECTS). The program consists of compulsory and elective courses in the fields of basic sciences, engineering sciences, and geosciences. Within the scope of the program, students are also required to successfully complete a compulsory internship of 45 days.
In the later semesters of the program, students have the opportunity to improve their professional knowledge and skills by taking field elective courses in different geoscience disciplines according to their interests.

The Geological Engineering Undergraduate Program continues the long-established geoscience tradition of Istanbul Technical University and offers a strong education and research environment covering different sub-disciplines of geology. Within the department, 347 undergraduate, 42 master’s, and 28 doctoral students continue their education.
The department constitutes one of the largest and most comprehensive Geological Engineering departments in Türkiye with its large academic staff consisting of 36 faculty members, 2 lecturers, 20 research assistants, and 6 administrative and technical personnel specialized in a wide range of research areas. This academic staff possesses a strong scientific background supported by numerous research projects conducted at national and international levels.
The laboratory infrastructure within the department was renewed and modernized in 2009, enabling students to work with up-to-date analytical techniques and research methods. In addition, through seminars, scientific meetings, and academic events organized by the department, students are able to closely follow current developments in the field of geosciences and interact with researchers from different countries.
Faculty members of the department actively maintain collaborations with international universities and research institutes, and numerous joint projects and scientific studies are carried out. In addition, through the Erasmus and similar international exchange programs of the university, students have the opportunity to study at universities abroad and experience different academic environments.
Registration Requirements
Program Learning Environments
Courses within the Geological Engineering Undergraduate Program are conducted for full-time students, and education is mainly carried out during daytime hours. In the program, theoretical courses, laboratory applications, and field studies are conducted together, providing students with a comprehensive learning environment.
At Istanbul Technical University, education is organized on a semester basis. Each academic year consists of Fall and Spring semesters, and in each semester the courses cover an instructional period of approximately 14 weeks, excluding the period allocated for final examinations.
Courses and applications belonging to the Geological Engineering Undergraduate Program are mainly conducted within the Department of Geological Engineering, Faculty of Mines, at the ITU Ayazağa Campus. Within the scope of the program, students can benefit from departmental laboratories such as the thin section laboratory, XRD laboratory, mineral preparation laboratory, geochemistry laboratory, geomicrobiology laboratory, rock mechanics and index laboratory, and microscopy rooms. Laboratory studies are supported by field applications and geological observation activities in order to reinforce students’ theoretical knowledge and to develop their professional skills.
The learning materials used in the courses and the educational processes are also supported by web-based tools. Through the NINOVA e-learning platform provided by Istanbul Technical University, students can access course materials, announcements, assignments, course resources, attendance information, and discussion boards.
Within the program, students may also benefit from certain courses offered in different faculties within the university. Depending on the relevant program, these courses may be conducted at the Ayazağa campus as well as at the Gümüşsuyu, Taşkışla, and Tuzla campuses. This structure enables students to acquire interdisciplinary knowledge and benefit from different academic environments.

Program Educational Objectives
The educational objective of the Geological Engineering Undergraduate Program is to educate geological engineers who possess a strong scientific background in a wide range of topics such as mineralogy–petrography, geochemistry, economic geology, energy raw materials, engineering geology, hydrogeology, environmental geology, tectonics, stratigraphy, sedimentology, and natural hazards within the fundamental and applied fields of geology; who are capable of analytical and critical thinking; and who have developed an awareness of scientific ethics and professional responsibility.
Within the scope of the program, it is aimed that students integrate knowledge of basic sciences and engineering with theoretical and applied knowledge in the field of geosciences. In this context, students receive an education supported not only by theoretical courses but also by laboratory applications and field studies, gaining knowledge and experience in modern analytical techniques and field methods. The modernized laboratory infrastructure and applied training opportunities within the department contribute to the development of students’ professional skills.
The program also aims to equip students with the competencies to analyze problems using scientific methods, develop solutions, work in interdisciplinary environments, and follow technological developments. In this framework, seminars, scientific meetings, and academic events organized within the department enable students to follow current scientific developments.
Faculty members of the ITU Geological Engineering Department actively conduct collaborations with national and international universities and research institutions, and students have the opportunity to benefit from this academic environment.
