The information and program qualifications related to the Solid Mechanics Master of Science Program, under the Department of Mechanical Engineering of the Graduate School, are summarized below.
Information About The Program
Solid Mechanics M.Sc. Program is a graduate program under the Department of Mechanical Engineering and provides education only at M.Sc. graduate level.
Physics and mathematics have gained an important role in engineering education since the 19th century, with the improvement in basic scientific knowledge and the understanding that they can be applied in design problems. Further developments in computer technology since the middle of the 20th century, along with the numerical methods and the accesibility of software to end users which utilize these methods, have led to the need for a deeper theoretical background for engineers.
The mechanics of solids is a fundamental field with applications in all branches of engineering. Competitive structural design in today's era requires advanced knowledge of solid mechanics. thus, within the scope of the program, the relationship between the mechanics of materials and the performance of a structure, which is prominent in applications, is discussed at an advanced level. As a result of understanding of this relationship, it is possible to realize new optimal designs. The mechanics of solids is widely utilized in solutions of the mechanical, aerospace, naval and civil engineering problems, in the design of microelectronic structures, in the analysis and design of biomechanical-based problems and implant and prosthetic system design challanges.
Based on the fact that the qualified engineers needed by the industry and the qualified academicians needed by the academy can only be trained through the teaching of solid theoretical foundations, the Solid Mechanics M.Sc. Program has a teaching staff and course program that can provide the highly qualified knowledge needed by modern engineers.

Measurement and Evaluation
Evaluating Student Success
The student success is evaluated considering Articles 56, 57, 58, and 59 of the Istanbul Technical University Graduate Education and Training Regulation Senate Principles.
ARTICLE 56 - Before the enrollment for the courses begins, the faculty member who offers the course informs the Program Executive Committee about the types, number and contribution percentage to the final grade of the studies within the semester, as well as requirements for a right to take the semester final exam. These requirements shall be finalized by approval of the Program Executive Committee and approval of the chair of the department, who declares them to the student and informs the Graduate School.
ARTICLE 57 - A student may appeal the final grade of a course within one week following the announcement of the grades. Appeals must be submitted to the Graduate School in writing. The relevant faculty member shall re-evaluate the student's success status and submit the result to the Graduate School within one week. Appeals not submitted within the prescribed time frame shall not be considered by the Graduate School.
