ITU Mechanical Engineering Department is a modern and persistent educational and research institution. The department has the most enhanced laboratories in Turkey.
Mechanical Engineering PhD Program focuses on research and education the areas of design, development and manufacturing of mechanical systems and energy conversion systems. Scientific research and development activities are continuing in several areas like the automobile industry, energy-producing systems, petrochemical industry, robotics, textile industry and defense industry.

The mission of the program is to reveal the human potential which is innovators, have systematic problem-solving approaches, and can successfully participate in industry, universities and research institutes by educating the candidates with theoretical and applied studies at doctorate level in areas of mechanical engineering.

Program Educational Objectives
i. To be able to develop and deepen knowledge at the level of expertise and to understand the interdisciplinary interaction with which the field is related.
ii. To be able to use theoretical and practical knowledge and to be able to interpret and integrate with the knowledge belong to different disciplinary fields and to be able to finding new knowledge, to be able to solve problems by utilizing scientific research methods.
iii. Being able to take responsibility for an area of expertise, independently developing solutions, developing new strategic approaches for solving complex problems, leadership in team work environments.
iv. Be able to critically evaluate and guide the knowledge and skills of the level of expertise gained in the field.
v. To be able to systematically present the current developments and their own activities to the related groups which are in the field and outside the field.

Evaluating Student Success
The student success is evaluated considering Articles 56, 57, 58, and 59 of the Istanbul Technical University Graduate Education and Training Regulation Senate Principles.
ARTICLE 56 - Before the enrollment for the courses begins, the faculty member who offers the course informs the Program Executive Committee about the types, number and contribution percentage to the final grade of the studies within the semester, as well as requirements for a right to take the semester final exam. These requirements shall be finalized by approval of the Program Executive Committee and approval of the chair of the department, who declares them to the student and informs the Graduate School.
ARTICLE 57 - A student may appeal the final grade of a course within one week following the announcement of the grades. Appeals must be submitted to the Graduate School in writing. The relevant faculty member shall re-evaluate the student's success status and submit the result to the Graduate School within one week. Appeals not submitted within the prescribed time frame shall not be considered by the Graduate School.
