Information About The Program
“Project and Construction Management” commonly known as “Construction Project Management” is an expertise and an independent profession area that is effectively applied in the Architecture-Engineering-Construction industry all over the world. Project and Construction Management is also a long-established academic research field with numerous undergraduate, master’s and PhD programs on a global scale.
The Project and Construction Management graduate program, which has been in existence at Istanbul Technical University since 1975, is carried out by the academic board of the program specialized in the field, which also provides lectures in the undergraduate and graduate programs that include project and construction management knowledge areas with up-to-date courses.
The program targets Architecture and Civil Engineering graduates who want to specialize in the project and construction management field. The program establishes strong relations and collaborations with academics and professionals both at national and international levels.
Since 2000, the program has continued to provide graduate education under the name of “Project and Construction Management” as an MSc program affiliated with the ITU Graduate School (formerly ITU Institute of Science and Technology). The rapid advancement of the Project and Construction Management field on both the national and international scales not only increases the demand for qualified researchers and lecturers in this field but also raises the demand for experts to take an active role within the industry. As a response to these demands, the “Project and Construction Management” PhD program was established in 2016.
ITU Project and Construction Management program trains managers with the technical skills and vision to manage multi-organizational teams throughout the life cycle of the project, the ability to use project management tools and techniques and approach the dynamic project processes holistically to lead the projects in the dynamic and constantly developing the Architecture-Engineering-Construction industry.

The field of project and construction management is a scientific research and activity area that has been carried out for many years in the Architecture-Engineering-Construction industry. Project and construction management professionals provide coordination among project stakeholders throughout all design and construction stages following the decision to build, and carry out planning, organization, execution, and control activities in line with the basic criteria of time, cost, and quality.

Program Educational Objectives
The graduates of the Project and Construction Management Graduate Programs will acquire a range of knowledge and skills, such as comprehension of project life cycle procedures, management and organizational principles, expertise in project delivery methods, and the ability to effectively manage relationships among project participants. Graduates will also have the competency to plan and program project and construction activities, implement time and cost control measures, plan and maintain quality standards during construction, create bid documents and assess bids, manage construction contracts and specifications, as well as strategically plan for material, equipment, and human resources.
Graduates who are trained as competent managers in the project and construction management knowledge areas will be equipped with many knowledge and skills along with communication, presentation and problem-solving:
-Having the ability to plan and conduct research, finalize and repeat it, as well as having an in-depth knowledge of contemporary developments in the professional field and being able to apply current knowledge in practice.
-Accessing existing information on a research topic, focusing on research direction, classifying and using the information to prepare scientific reports, and presenting and defending results.
-Being equipped with the ethics, discipline, and culture of the group and individual research and work, being able to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
-Ability to report and document using contemporary management tools and information technologies to respond to current issues and developments in the Architecture-Engineering-Construction sector.

Measurement and Evaluation
Evaluating Student Success
The student success is evaluated considering Articles 56, 57, 58, and 59 of the Istanbul Technical University Graduate Education and Training Regulation Senate Principles.
ARTICLE 56 - Before the enrollment for the courses begins, the faculty member who offers the course informs the Program Executive Committee about the types, number and contribution percentage to the final grade of the studies within the semester, as well as requirements for a right to take the semester final exam. These requirements shall be finalized by approval of the Program Executive Committee and approval of the chair of the department, who declares them to the student and informs the Graduate School.
ARTICLE 57 - A student may appeal the final grade of a course within one week following the announcement of the grades. Appeals must be submitted to the Graduate School in writing. The relevant faculty member shall re-evaluate the student's success status and submit the result to the Graduate School within one week. Appeals not submitted within the prescribed time frame shall not be considered by the Graduate School.

ARTICLE 59 - Students who wish to improve their cumulative grade point average may retake courses during the course-taking period. The most recent grade will be counted for the repeated courses.

Graduation Requirements
1. Project and Construction Management Ph.D. Program students:
a. Must successfully complete at least 21 credits.
b. Must take at least 50% of the total credits from graduate courses offered by the programs affiliated with the student’s registered Department.
c. Must take at least 30% of the total credits from English courses.
2. Project and Construction Management Ph.D. Program students must have a GPA of at least 3.00, must successfully complete seminar, doctorate proficiency exam, thesis proposal and thesis study, to graduate from Ph.D. program.

It is observed that the field of construction management has developed rapidly in our country parallel to the developments in the world. In addition to the demand on qualified researcher and lecturer in this area, the increasing demand from the sectoral stakeholders has become important.
In the field of project and construction management, the construction managers at the doctoral level have the opportunity to work in the areas of construction management knowledge areas such as; scope, cost, time, quality, communication, integration, human resources, procurement, risk, occupational health and safety, strategic management, finance, information technology and environmental management, that can create added value in the sectoral sense to the problems that will arise within the framework of current needs and developments.
