Information About The Program

ABOUT THE PROGRAM:
The ITU-IUS Mechanical Engineering Double Diploma Program, has been established in year 2019, as an International Bachelor of Science Joint Program between Istanbul Technical University (ITU) and International University of Sarajevo (IUS), comprising the programs of “Mechanical Engineering” at ITU and “Mechanical Engineering” at IUS. Within the framework of this program, after completing the the Preparatory Program (ELS) and first two academic years at IUS, students are entitled to receive both IUS and ITU bachelor's degrees by continuing their third and fourth academic years at ITU.

Students who have successfully fulfilled the academic requirements of both institutions are entitled to receive independent multiple (double) diplomas, one of which will be awarded by ITU and one by IUS. The title of the degree in both diplomas is “Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering”.

STUDENT ADMISSIONS:
Each year, a maximum of fifteen (30 in total) students who are citizens of the Republic of Turkiye and Bosnia and Herzegovina are admitted to the program.

Students who are citizens of the Republic of Turkiye, are placed in this program by the Student Selection and Placement Centre (ÖSYM) according to the results of the Higher Education Institutions Exam (YKS) after completing their high school education. Students who are below the score corresponding to the first 100.000 ranking in the NUMERICAL SCORE section of the YKS exam cannot apply.

Students who are citizens of Bosnia and Herzegovina, on the other hand, must meet the requirements specified in the public application announcement for the undergraduate program in accordance with the “Higher Education Law of the Canton of Sarajevo”. Candidates with a high school diploma average of more than 3.0 out of 5.0 obtained in Bosnia and Herzegovina are eligible to participate in the entrance exam organized by the IUS commission in the relevant field. In total, the 15 students who receive the highest grade are eligible to apply to the program.

Any undergraduate student complying with the relevant regulation of the ITU Senate and studying at IUS can apply to transfer to UOLP if he/she has an average of at least 3.0 out of 4.0 and is successful in the interview with both institutions. The number of students to be accepted for transfer to this joint program from other departments is a maximum of five (5) people per year.

Foreign students are required to comply with the relevant directive of the ITU Senate in order to apply for and receive admission to the program. The number of international students to be enrolled cannot exceed 50% of the total quota.

LANGUAGE OF INSTRUCTION:
The language of instruction is English. All students enrolled in the program are required to obtain a valid grade from one of the English proficiency exams given by ITU or IUS. In order for students to start their first academic year at IUS, it is mandatory that they meet the English language requirements of IUS. Prospective students applying for admission to UOLP are required to have English language proficiency equivalent to other international students who have applied and been accepted to IUS by the time they start taking courses.

The lowest score that must be obtained from the ITU Qualification Exam to start the program is 65 out of 100. The lowest score that must be obtained from the IUS Placement Exam and/or from the Qualification Exam to start the program is, 75 out of 100 and/or65 out of 100, respectively.

Students who cannot achieve English proficiency will participate in an intensive language education program at IUS. The maximum period that students can continue this intensive education program is two (2) years. Students who are citizens of the Republic of Turkey and who cannot fulfill the language proficiency requirement at the end of two years, can be placed in a program whose language of instruction is Turkish by ÖSYM according to the YKS result they received in the relevant year.

Prospective students who are eligible for the following conditions can be exempted from the ELS proficiency exam :

a) Those who get 79 points or more from the TOEFL iBT exam
b) Those who have completed their high school, undergraduate or graduate education in a country where the main language is English
c) Those who have received a high school diploma from one of the Cambridge Advanced International Education Certificate (AICE diploma) and/or International Diploma (IB diploma) programs.

The aim of ITU-IUS UOLP Mechanical Engineering Joint Undergraduate Program is to graduate Mechanical Engineers,
1. who are able to design mechanical and thermal process systems and components and provide the necessary integration between them;
2. who can assume a leadership role in the environment in which they are located by improving professional cooperation between scientists and engineers;
3. who are capable of making innovative contributions to the competitive power of organizations engaged in production, design and R&D activities;
4. who are able to access information and develop professionally for a successful career in industrial organizations, research organizations or academic institutions;
5. who can contribute to society from a professional point of view, being aware of ethical values and global challenges.

Program Learning Environments

Program courses are carried out at ITU Gümüşsuyu Prof. Dr. Necmettin Erbakan Campus. There are projection devices and screens and whiteboards in all of the approximately 40 classrooms with a capacity ranging from 40 to 150 students. ITU Ninova e-learning system (https://ninova.itu.edu.tr/tr /), where course notes and presentations, homework documents are distributed to students, announcements are made, and students upload homework and semester projects is used in all courses.
Computer laboratories, each of which has a capacity of 40 to 60 desktop computers, are used in programming classes for about 10 hours a week, and during all other times they are used for student studies, i.e. homeworks, projects and similar. All of these computers are connected to ITU's central servers, and licensed software can be used through this connection.
In two workshops (Applied Machine Project Workshop and Central Workshop) where workshop courses are conducted and student project prototypes are manufactured, all kinds of hand tools, facilities for applying classical manufacturing methods such as milling, turning, punching, sheet cutting, as well as additive manufacturing tools such as 3-D scanning and 3-D printing are used by students under the supervision of technicians.
Measurement experiment sets where basic measurement methods are introduced and mechanical engineering system setups where performance tests are performed are located within the research laboratories on campus. Students can find information, such as how to conduct these experiments, what is the purpose of the experiment, the characteristics of the devices used, accessing the faculty's youtube channel (https://www.youtube.com/c/İTÜMakinaFakültesi ) and conduct the experiments themselves under the supervision of faculty technicians and teaching assistants. These experiments cover the topics of Materials and Strength, Thermodynamics, Heat Transfer and Thermal Systems, Fluid Mechanics and Fluid Machinery, System Dynamics and Control, Mechanical Vibrations and Acoustics, Automotive, and Industrial Automation.
7th and 8th semester Mechanical Engineering Design courses, which are conducted in the form of teamwork of 2 to 4 members, students can perform literature research, market research, design, analysis, project design, prototype manufacturing and performance testing, optimization applications in real industrial projects supported by industrial organizations. The subjects of these projects are determined within the framework of protocols made with major companies from the defense, automotive, white goods, heavy machinery sectors of Turkish industry and are carried out under the supervision of a faculty member from the faculty and under the mentorship of an R&D engineer from the industrial organization. During the study period, students can use all the facilities of both the faculty and the company properly. Again, within the framework of the protocols made with these companies, our students can do mandatory and/or long-term internship work in the manufacturing, R&D, Project Management, Marketing departments of these organizations.

• SPACE AND OCEAN RESEARCH: Satellite mechanical and control systems. Mineral/oil/natural gas exploration systems in oceans and seas.
• ENERGY: Conventional power plants. Renewable energy (solar, wind, geothermal, etc) systems. Cogeneration systems.
• HEAVY DUTY MACHINES: Construction machines, hydraulic presses, CNC manufacturing machines, etc.
• FACILITY ESTABLISHMENT AND OPERATION: Production lines and factories for heavy industrial sectors such as ceramics, petrochemistry, metal, automotive, household appliances.
• CONSTRUCTION: Mechanical installation works, (air conditioning, elevator, escalator, fire protection and automation systems) especially in buildings and industrial facilities.
• AUTOMOTIVE: IC engine/electric/hybrid vehicle systems.
• ROBOTICS: Robotic and mechatronic applications in industry. Biomimetic systems.
• AIR CONDITIONING (HVAC): Heating, cooling, dehumidification and humidification, ventilation and exhaust devices and systems, for ensuring the user comfort and indoor air quality, in all types of residential, commercial, industrial and social facilities.
• HOUSEHOLD APPLIANCES: Household appliances, industrial and commercial laundry and kitchen appliances and facilities.
• TEXTILE: Spinning, weaving, dyeing and garment machines and production lines.
• MACHINE ELEMENTS: Parts that make up the machines (gear mechanisms, bearings, shafts, fasteners, springs, dampers, lubricating and sealing materials and elements, etc).
• BIO-MEDICAL AND BIO-TECHNOLOGY: Electromechanical medical devices used in disease diagnosis and treatment. Biomaterial development. Bio-inspired systems.
• MICRO AND NANO SCALE ELECTROMECHANICAL SYSTEMS: Sensors and automation technologies, advanced technologies based on small-scale scientific data in food/cosmetics/pharma/bio/textile/sports/defense/materials sectors.
Graduates of the Mechanical Engineering Department of ITU, Turkey's oldest (since 1773) Technical University, have been and are predominantly involved in the establishment and development of industry and technology in Turkey and other countries, in all these sectors and at the functional positions.
