Information About The Program

ITUMF is one of the youngest faculty in İTU and was founded in 1992. Maritime Faculty is the continuation of the High Maritime School which was founded in 1884. Maritime Faculty maintains education activities on Bsc/Msc/Ph.D. levels on a 70.000 m2 residential area that has a 400 m length of Marmara Sea coastline. The Department of Maritime Transportation Management Engineering offers graduate diplomas in maritime transportation management engineering and graduates will enter the seafarer license examinations held by the T.C. Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure- Seafarers Examination Center. Candidates who successfully pass the Seafarers license exam will be awarded an "Oceangoing Watchkeeping Officer Certificate". With this certificate, graduates can work as 2nd and 3rd officers on commercial ships.
In the department; Ship Efficiency Safety and Human Factors, Maritime Law Policies and Maritime Economy Management, Maritime Cognitive Ergonomics, Marine Remote Sensing, Industrial Marine Research Design and Implementation, Marine Traffic Management and Maritime Simulators, Advanced Research & Innovative Applications (ARIA) and Ship Machinery Energy Efficiency workgroups are available.

Program Educational Objectives

The purpose of the ITU Maritime Faculty, Department of Maritime Transportation and Management Engineering is to provide students with sound theories and technologies required in marine science, ship handling, and marine engineering. The maritime faculty offers a well-organized curriculum and facilities including sea training systems (Simulators Center, T/S Sismik I, Tug Boat Hopa, Seyit Onbası vessel etc.) to furnish students with outstanding leadership and team skills which are indispensable for successful professionals in the maritime field.


Measurement and Evaluation

Program Employment Opportunities

Graduates enter the Oceangoing Watchkeeping Officer's License examination at the Seafarers Exam Center (GASM). If they successfully pass the Exam, they are awarded the Oceangoing Watchkeeping Officer License held by the T.C. Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure. Graduates can work as second and third officers on commercial vessels with this certificate. After a certain period of working at sea, the Oceangoing Watchkeeping Officers upgrade their seafarer qualifications and become the First Officer and then the Master. In maritime companies, such duties as general manager, business manager, technical director, deck supervisor and human resource manager can be undertaken. They are also able to work as a maritime pilot in the Turkish Straits and ports after their sea experience.
