Information About The Program
Since its establishment, ITU Faculty of Architecture, Department of Urban and Regional Planning continues to act as a key institution to lead and guide planning education and profession in Turkey. The vision of the department is to create a leading milieu of innovative, creative, competitive, and productive education, research, and planning practices at national and international levels. It endures its education, research, and practice activities as a worldwide competing research university to produce genuine and high-quality knowledge through interdisciplinary collaboration. Besides, it reflects the scientific knowledge it produces in social life through the advancement of public interest with its faculty, competing for its recognition nationally and internationally, and integrating its rich tradition with contemporary achievements.
The undergraduate Program of Urban and Regional Planning, serving since 1983 with its largest academic staff in Turkey, is guiding future planners that comprehend life, society, and space, inquire and capture holistic relationships with analytical knowledge, integrate science with creative and intellectual identity; develop through innovation, and lastly adopt equity, public interest and right to the city as main values. 30% of the curriculum has been served in English since 1997 in order to increase Urban Planners Alumni’s competencies in the international arena. The department has offered an additional 100% English curriculum since the 2010-2011 academic year. The total credits of the undergraduate program are 130 (240 ECTS) consisting of mandatory and elective courses as well as studios. The curriculum takes into account participation in not only international exchange programs but also in double major and minor programs between diverse disciplines.

Program Educational Objectives
The undergraduate program of Urban and Regional Planning aims to train future planners that comprehend life, society, and space, inquire and capture holistic relationships with analytical knowledge, integrate science with creative and intellectual identity, develop through innovation, and lastly adopt equity, public interest and right to the city as main values.
Key objectives of urban and regional planning undergraduate education in ITU are:
• to ensure a scientific and systematic way of thinking,
• to improve the ability to make the synthesis of knowledge and generate alternative decision-making,
• to achieve a holistic comprehension of the environmental components of settlements,
• to adopt quality of urban life,
• to improve awareness of protecting natural and cultural values,
• and to gain professional ethics and responsibility, and skills of teamwork.
Measurement and Evaluation
Student success is evaluated in consideration of Articles 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, and 25 of the Istanbul Technical University Undergraduate Education and Training Regulation.

Program Employment Opportunities
The urban and regional planning program graduates can work in both the public and private sectors in urban or rural settlements. Urban and regional planners take on a wide range of roles in public institutions (such as Ministries, Development Agencies, and Municipalities). They have the ability of decision-making about determining urban growth policies and strategies, directing community development, and planning for different scales from metropolitan to rural areas. Planners in the private sector can work at their own planning firms and in real estate development agencies, banks, industrial entities, mass housing authorities, and investment companies.
