Mathematical Engineering Doctor of Philosophy Program

The information and program qualifications related to the Mathematical Engineering Doctor of Philosophy Program, under the Department of Mathematical Engineering of the Graduate School, are summarized below.

Information About The Program

Our department was founded in 1971 under the name of the Department of Mathematics and was later renamed the Department of Mathematical Engineering in 1973. The department offers Master of Science (M.Sc) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degrees in Mathematical Engineering.

For a Ph.D. degree, the students must take a minimum of 8 courses with at least 24 credits, a qualifier exam, and then submit a thesis proposal, and a thesis. On the other hand, students admitted to the programme with a Bachelor’s degree only must take a minimum of 15 courses with a total of at least 45 credits, a qualifier exam, and then submit a thesis proposal, and thesis. Only those who have successfully passed their qualifier exams after completing the required courses may proceed to their thesis studies. The thesis work is non-credit and is evaluated as successful or unsuccessful.

Students must complete the programme no longer than 8 semesters, whereas those who are admitted with a Bachelor's degree only have 10 semesters to complete the programme. The doctoral programme cannot be completed in less than 5 semesters, with a minimum of 2 semesters devoted to the thesis study.

The Ph.D. programme of the Department of Mathematical Engineering offers doctoral studies in the fields of Algebra, Functional Analysis, Operator Theory, Differential Geometry, Partial Differential Equations, Nonlinear Wave Propagation, Topology, Probability, Mathematical Finance, Control Theory, Dynamic Systems and Chaos, Discrete Mathematics and Mathematical Physics.

Measurement and Evaluation

Evaluating Student Success
The student success is evaluated considering Articles 56, 57, 58, and 59 of the Istanbul Technical University Graduate Education and Training Regulation Senate Principles.

ARTICLE 56 - Before the enrollment for the courses begins, the faculty member who offers the course informs the Program Executive Committee about the types, number and contribution percentage to the final grade of the studies within the semester, as well as requirements for a right to take the semester final exam. These requirements shall be finalized by approval of the Program Executive Committee and approval of the chair of the department, who declares them to the student and informs the Graduate School.

ARTICLE 57 - A student may appeal the final grade of a course within one week following the announcement of the grades. Appeals must be submitted to the Graduate School in writing. The relevant faculty member shall re-evaluate the student's success status and submit the result to the Graduate School within one week. Appeals not submitted within the prescribed time frame shall not be considered by the Graduate School.

ARTICLE 58 - Courses in graduate programs shall be evaluated according to the following grading system.
Grade Description Grade Scale
Excellent AA 4.00
Very good plus BA+ 3.75
Very good BA 3.50
Good plus BB+ 3.25
Good BB 3.00
Conditional Pass CB+ 2.75

Conditional Pass CC+ 2.25
Conditional Pass CC 2.00
Fail FF 0.00
Fail(No Exam) VF 0.00

ARTICLE 59 - Students who wish to improve their cumulative grade point average may retake courses during the course-taking period. The most recent grade will be counted for the repeated courses.

Internship

There is no internship in this program.

Graduation Requirements

PhD students must successfully complete 21 elective courses related to their study areas. If they pass the proficiency exam and successfully complete their doctoral thesis, they obtain a doctorate degree. In their doctoral thesis, the student is expected to specialize in a special subject, to introduce innovations in that subject and to do at least one international scientific study.

Students who are admitted to doctorate program with a bachelor's degree must successfully complete 39 credits. These students must select at least 25% of the total course credits they are required to take, from the compulsory courses of the relevant graduate program.

Applicants who have successfully completed at least 24 credits and who have been accepted to the doctorate program with a bachelor's degree must apply to the institute with a petition in order to transfer to the graduate program with thesis. The transfer of the student to graduate programs takes place in compliance with the decision of the institute board of directors.
